GUIDE Check out this handy guide written by professional photographer Colby Brown. All photographers new to Google+ should give it a read.

Emerging Photographers Nicely Formatted Version can be found at: https://plus.google.com/107489144252174167638/about Emerging Photographer Groups. 7th November 2011 CliffsNotes Version: Diversity is good. Fast tracking increases diversity. Admittance to the group will now be based solely on recent posts. Proportion of original photographs must be high. Quality of work is still not a bar to entry in any way. Animated GIFs will count against. Rejection is not a permanent condition I will monitor the Emerging Photographers group The Emerging Photographer group will not be allowed to grow above 500 (one shared circle). No limit on the EP plus group. The 1,000ish maximum circle bar to entry remains in place. Ethos The original Emerging Photographer list was designed to give photographers new to G+ a chance to gain a foothold quickly. Doing this obviously benefits the photographer directly concerned but it also benefits everyone involved as the more diverse the range of talents, and abilities the more dynamic the G+ environment remains. This diversity spreads the influence within the community among many and becomes a force to stop attitudes from hardening and being passed down from the top. Make no mistake, photography on G+ is/will be huge, not just in internet terms but in a a much larger context. What happens here will not just be a reflection of the state of photography in the real world it will also be major in determining the overall direction of the practise. The bottom line as I see it is that having as many people empowered in the system as possible is always a good thing and helping to give newcomers a stake before they get fed up with shouting into the wind and disappear elsewhere is an essential part of this process. Of all the online communities that I have known G+ is the closest I've seen to a meritocracy, i.e. if you produce good content you will get to have a voice fairly quickly so it could be argued that there is no important function for the Emerging Photographer setup to perform. I think that the group will always act as a check and balance against the concentration of power and influence within G+ albeit a relatively small one. Obviously the above is opinion and, if you are reading this on my profile, I will post a copy on my stream for discussion. I am always (well, sometimes) willing to modify my views and approach in the presence of a stronger argument. Changes The evolution of the Emerging Photographer group to this point has been roughly as follows: I threw the idea for the group out, along with suggested criteria of 1,000 circles maximum for joining and the feedback was 100% positive and there was a lot more of it than I expected so I set the thing up. Everything beyond the initial setting up of the group has been done as a reaction to an issue as it has arisen. In other words, there is no master plan. The project was also set up before the doors of G+ were opened to the general public. Since the opening up of the platform scaling up has been a bit of a headache. This leads up to a big change that I am making from this point forward, the way people are accepted into the group. Up until now it has been based on numerical criteria with as little discretion for subjectivity from me as possible. This seemed to fit in with the diversity ethos and, on a pragmatic level, meant that I didn't have to get embroiled in arguments about quality of work. I am still not going to get involved in arguments about quality of work, that will not change but my method for deciding whether someone is suitable for the group will be as follows: The only page that I look at will be the recent posts page. If original photos by the applicant predominate they will get in. I will be looking for a ratio of at least two posts (preferably three or four) with an original photograph to every one post that is either the shared work of someone else or non-photography related. Animated GIFs will count heavily against. More than one on a page of ten posts will probably get the applicant excluded. The main reason for doing it this way is that this method gives an accurate reflection of what the visitor will actually see if they check out the profile. It is essential that the list remains useful to the people downloading it. A couple of things to bear in mind: A rejection is not permanent as the applicant can reapply when their stream conforms more to the requirement that their photography is the predominant part of their output. This does not affect anyone already in the groups. The other change is that I will monitor the Emerging Photographer group and check the profiles of anyone who doesn't move through it relatively quickly as this will mean that they have probably either stopped posting or are posting too much non-original photography stuff. If this has happened I'll remove them. The Emerging Photographer Plus group won't be subjected to this as, to be honest, once people enter this group the main part of the fastracking process has been done. That is about it for now. As far as the EP plus group goes I'll just allow that to get as big as it gets. I will still post all lists (circles) at least once every two weeks. currently there are two circles but this will soon rise to three as I'll have to split the plus group. The original Emerging Photographer group should have a fast throughput but the number should remain fairly constant. I will not allow this group to go above the G+ circle posting limit of 500. One absolutely final note: The in 1,000 circles maximum still holds (although there is a little flexibility here due to differences in numbers and time lag between applying and me approving). If this is dropped the whole point of the group dissappears - then it just becomes a number boosting exercise as opposed something to benefit both photographers and consumers of photography. I would request that people with more than 1,000 or so followers don't put their names forward.
